The first report of Taiwanese sponge
In 1868, a paper entitled “Note on Theonella, a new genus of coralloid sponges from Formosa” (Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1868: 565‑566) was the first report of Taiwanese sponge. J. E. Gray examined the sponge specimen deposited in British Museum (collected by R. Swinhoe in 1867) and described it as a new genus and a new species, Theonella swinhoe. A figure was included, but without the detailed locality and habitat.
